THCA vs CBD: Heat Makes the Difference
THCA flower can pass as hemp in the jar and behave like marijuana in the pipe. Raw THCA doesn't intoxicate, but heat turns it into THC, which does, while CBD doesn't intoxicate at all. Once a THCA product is smoked, vaped or baked, the user is consuming THC, and a failed drug test becomes a real possibility. Established

What the evidence supports
- Heat is the difference. Everything turns on one reaction. Heating strips THCA's carboxylic-acid group off as CO₂ and leaves Δ⁹-THC behind; the lost group is about 12% of the molecule's mass, which is why total-THC calculations multiply the THCA figure by 0.877 (Wang 2016). Established
- Two branches, one precursor. The two compounds start from the same place. THCA synthase builds THCA from CBGA (Sirikantaramas 2004), and CBDA synthase builds CBDA, which becomes CBD on heating. Both enzymes are a little sloppy, each turning out some CBCA on the side (Zirpel 2018). Established
- Why THCA flower's legal status is disputed. Which figure counts, delta-9 alone or total THC, is where the legal fight lives. Tested for delta-9 THC alone, THCA-rich flower can pass as hemp; tested for total THC, it usually fails; and jurisdictions differ on which yardstick they use. [Legal snapshot · not legal advice]
- Drug testing. The same chemistry follows the product to the lab. THCA products readily deliver THC, so they carry a real drug-test risk. Tests look for THC rather than CBD, though many CBD products carry enough trace THC to matter. Established
- THCA's own effects. What THCA does in its own right is still an open file: our registry does not yet contain a study of it, a gap in coverage rather than a verdict. Heated THCA is THC, and THC's record belongs to a different compound. Catalogue in progress
Common questions
Is THCA the same as CBD?
They are different compounds, on different branches of the plant's chemistry. THCA is the raw acid on the THC branch, and heat turns it into intoxicating Δ⁹-THC. CBD comes from its own acid, CBDA, and stays non-intoxicating. Follow both branches back far enough and they meet at the same precursor, CBGA. Established
Does THCA or CBD get you high?
Neither does in raw form, but THCA only stays that way until it meets heat. Almost any heat turns it into Δ⁹-THC, which will get you high, so a THCA-rich product that is smoked, vaped or baked delivers THC. CBD stays non-intoxicating throughout. Established
Will THCA or CBD make me fail a drug test?
THCA quite possibly will. THCA-rich products readily deliver THC, and some lab methods detect THCA directly. CBD's risk comes in by the back door: standard tests target THC rather than CBD, yet many CBD products carry trace THC that a test can pick up. Established
Is THCA flower legal where CBD is?
That depends on which test the jurisdiction applies. US federal law defines hemp as having no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, and THCA-rich flower can meet that reading. Many states and federal enforcement positions count total THC instead, THCA included, and by that yardstick the same flower usually fails. General information, not legal advice; verify locally. Does THCA do what people say CBD does?
Nobody can say yet, because our registry contains no study of THCA's own effects. CBD has been studied far more, and its one approved prescription use, for certain rare seizure disorders, is a regulatory fact that says nothing about consumer products. (Not medical advice.) Catalogue in progress

Informational only, not medical advice. CBG Atlas is a scientific reference. Nothing here diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents any disease. Every claim on the page carries the grade of the evidence behind it, and the grade sets the words the claim may use. How we grade evidence.
Each grade rates the support for a claim across the literature. It does not rate any single study. An effect in cells may never show up in people. The grades cover the studies checked up to 9 August 2026. This page is for information and is not medical advice.
