What are cannabinoid acids?
The short answer
Cannabinoid acids are the acidic forms the cannabis plant actually produces. The familiar “neutral” cannabinoids — CBG, CBD, THC and the rest — do not exist in large amounts in the living plant; they form from these acids when a carboxyl group (–COOH) is lost as CO₂ on heating, a reaction called decarboxylation. This is established chemistry.
CBGA is the mother acid. Cannabigerolic acid is the common starting point: plant enzymes convert CBGA toward the other acid lines (THCA, CBDA, CBCA), and each acid then decarboxylates to its neutral compound.
Decarboxylation, briefly: gentle heating (roughly 110–160 °C) drives off CO₂ and converts an acid to its neutral form. A practical consequence — raw THCA is non-intoxicating; it only becomes intoxicating THC after it is decarboxylated.
