THCA vs THC: What Heat Changes
Cannabis makes THCA, an acid that doesn't get anyone high. Heat turns it into THC, which does. A flame, a vape coil or an oven strips THCA's carboxyl group off as CO₂, so a THCA product that is smoked, vaped or baked delivers THC, and whether it intoxicates comes down to whether it has been heated. Established
That single reaction explains a whole shelf category. THCA-rich flower can pass as hemp on paper, and the chemistry of what happens when it is lit is settled. The live questions sit downstream, in the law, the drug test and the COA, and those are where buyers and sellers get caught.
Every statement below is graded by the evidence behind it. Legal notes are general, dated and not legal advice; this page makes no therapeutic claim for either compound.

What's actually established
Most of what matters here follows from one reaction and one carbon atom.
- Heat decides intoxication. Raw THCA is non-intoxicating, THC intoxicates, and heating turns the first into the second. Established
- The gap is one carboxyl group. THCA (C₂₂H₃₀O₄) carries a carboxyl group that THC (C₂₁H₃₀O₂) has shed, and decarboxylation strips it off as CO₂. Established
- Conversion speed. Wang 2016 measured roughly first-order kinetics across about 80–145 °C and found THCA converting about twice as fast as CBDA or CBGA. At smoking and vaping temperatures the change is rapid. Established
- Origin in the plant. The enzyme THCA synthase builds THCA from CBGA, the "mother" acid (Sirikantaramas 2004). Established
- "Total THC." Heat is the reason labs compute it: Δ⁹-THC plus 0.877 × THCA, with 0.877 correcting for the CO₂ lost on conversion. THCA-rich flower can pass as hemp on a Δ⁹-only test and usually fails on total THC, which means a COA reporting Δ⁹-THC alone understates what the product delivers once heated. Established
- Drug testing. Screens look for THC metabolites. Heating THCA yields THC, and raw product already holds some THC from slow conversion, so THCA products carry a real drug-test risk. Established
- Legal status (general, dated; not legal advice). As of 2026, US federal law defines hemp by its Δ⁹-THC content, at or below 0.3% dry weight, and THCA-rich flower can meet that definition. Many states and enforcement positions measure total THC instead, and above the threshold THC is federally controlled. [Legal snapshot · not legal advice]

Common questions
Does THCA get you high?
Raw THCA doesn't; heated THCA does, because heat turns it into THC. Sitting in the jar, the acid is non-intoxicating. Almost any heat converts it into Δ⁹-THC, which is why a THCA-rich product that is smoked, vaped or baked delivers THC in practice. Established
Is THCA the same as THC?
They are two different molecules, and one becomes the other. The plant makes THCA, an acid. When heat removes its carboxyl group as CO₂, what's left behind is THC. Established
Why does smoking THCA flower get you high?
The flame turns it into THC. At combustion and vaporisation temperatures THCA decarboxylates quickly, so what reaches the lungs is Δ⁹-THC. Once lit, "THCA flower" behaves as THC flower. Established
Will THCA show up on a drug test?
Quite possibly. Screens look for THC metabolites, and THCA products turn into THC readily when smoked, vaped or cooked, and slowly on the shelf. A THCA product sold as drug-test-safe is making a promise the chemistry can't keep. Established
Is THCA legal where THC is not?
It depends on how THC is measured. US federal law defines hemp by Δ⁹-THC at or below 0.3% dry weight, and THCA-rich flower can qualify on that reading. Many states and enforcement positions count total THC, which includes THCA, and the rules are still moving. General information, not legal advice. [Legal snapshot · not legal advice]
Does raw or juiced cannabis get you high?
Usually not, because raw, unheated material holds most of its THC-line content as THCA, which is non-intoxicating. The conversion keeps ticking over slowly in the background, though. Drying, storage and processing turn some THCA into THC, so raw products can contain some THC. Established
What is "total THC"?
Total THC estimates how much THC a product delivers once heated: Δ⁹-THC plus 0.877 × THCA. The 0.877 factor corrects for the CO₂ lost in conversion. Jurisdictions differ on which standard they apply. Not legal advice. Established
At what temperature does THCA turn into THC?
Slowly at room temperature, quickly with heat. Wang 2016 measured roughly first-order kinetics across about 80–145 °C, with THCA converting about twice as fast as CBDA or CBGA, and smoking or vaping temperatures push the conversion through fast. Established
